Global and Far-Right Populism & Immigration in Europe
The twin forces of far-right populism and immigration have become defining elements of contemporary European life. Over the past decade, populist leaders have exploited concerns around globalization, identity, and borders, reshaping political discourse and challenging liberal democratic institutions. Immigration, meanwhile, has remained a central fault line in public debate and policymaking, intertwining questions of economic security, cultural identity, and European solidarity.
Mission
This research area investigates the interplay between populism, immigration, and governance in Europe and connects these domestic developments to the broader surge of global far-right populism. The initiative seeks to generate empirically grounded, comparative research and foster international dialogue that informs democratic resilience and inclusive policymaking.
Vision
CeRSP envisions a Europe that can reconcile openness with coherence, strengthening democratic institutions while responding effectively to societal concerns about immigration and identity politics. By bridging academic research and policy debate, the programme aims to illuminate pathways toward civic inclusion, social trust, and adaptive governance in the age of populism.
Goals
- Advance comparative research on far-right populism, immigration, and governance across EU member states and in comparative perspective with other regions.
- Foster multidisciplinary exchanges amongst scholars, policymakers, and civil society/non-governmental organizations on the causes, consequences, and counterstrategies for populist movements.
- Provide an evidence base for policy innovation in immigration management, liberal democratic participation, and institutional reform.
- Contribute to a global understanding of populism’s interaction with political economy, digital communication, and identity politics.
Target Audience
- Policymakers and think tank analysts seeking evidence-based insights for designing inclusive and resilient governance systems.
- Researchers studying European politics, populism, comparative governance, and immigration.
- Civil society actors and educators promoting liberal democratic engagement and intercultural dialogue.
- Journalists and public communicators interested in interpretive and data-driven analysis of populist trends.
